According to the English Proficiency Index, Argentina ranks first in Latin America in terms of English proficiency, and 25th worldwide. The study is carried out annually in 100 countries and across the regions of the world, and tests approximately 2,200,000 people in order to determine what is the impact of the English language on the professional development as well as on the insertion of a person in the local economic system.
On the other hand, the first non-English-speaking country is the Netherlands achieving a score of 652 units, which is equivalent to a C1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference. That rate establishes the level of competence, skills and the European languages learning process. The C1 level achieved by the Dutch society is equivalent to that of “lower advanced”, the highest possible for a non-English-speaking country. Four Scandinavian countries, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland continue in the ranking, achieving good scores firstly due to the early exposure of children both in and out of school, and secondly, thanks to the new teaching approach that places the emphasis on communication skills and professional training with technical English for each discipline.
Actually, the same factors are those that allowed Argentina to be in the 25th position on the world list, as well as being the first country in Latin America counting on 566 points, the equivalent to level B2, «upper intermediate» level in the Common Framework scale. In the region, Costa Rica, Chile, Paraguay, Cuba and Bolivia also obtained good scores.
In Argentina, the city with the best level of English turned out to be Mar del Plata, followed by Buenos Aires province in which the level of English was higher than in countries such as Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Greece. Santa Fe city was in the third place, followed by La Plata. In addition, Córdoba, Mendoza and Rosario. Corrientes, San Miguel de Tucumán and Paraná were given an honourable mention since the English language improved substantially in the last year.
The new educational paradigms in foreign language teaching, which prioritise communication skills in real contexts, seem to be the key to the acquisition of English at a high level, since they are more attractive and easier to put into practice and at the same time, reinforces their learning. In terms of gender, women tend to have higher levels of education, although their insertion is still conditioned by prejudices and sexist practices that relegate them. Although it is not possible to make linear relations, in general terms, countries with higher English proficiency have better rates of education, prosperity and lower gender inequalities, constituting more egalitarian societies.
La Argentina es el país de América Latina con mejor nivel de inglés
De acuerdo con el English Proficiency Index, o Índice de Dominio del Inglés, Argentina se ubica en el primer lugar de América Latina en el nivel de inglés, y en el puesto 25 a nivel mundial. El estudio se realiza anualmente en 100 países y regiones del mundo, y evalúa aproximadamente a 2.200.000 personas, para determinar cómo influye el manejo de la lengua inglesa en el desarrollo profesional y laboral además de la inserción de la persona en relación con la economía nacional.
Así, el primer país de habla no inglesa es Países Bajos, que alcanzó un puntaje de 652 unidades, que equivale a un nivel C1 del Marco Común de Referencia Europeo, el que establece los niveles de competencia, habilidades y aprendizaje de las lenguas europeas. El nivel C1 alcanzado por la nación neerlandesa equivale al de “avanzado inferior”, el más alto posible para un país no angloparlante. Cuatro naciones escandinavas, Dinamarca, Suecia, Noruega y Finlandia continúan en el ranking, alcanzado buenos puntajes debido a la exposición temprana de los niños tanto dentro como fuera de la escuela, así también como gracias al nuevo enfoque de enseñanza con énfasis en las habilidades comunicativas y la formación profesional con inglés técnico para cada disciplina.
Precisamente esos mismos factores son los que le permitieron a Argentina ocupar el puesto 25 de la lista mundial, además de ser el primer país de América Latina con 566 puntos, equivalentes al nivel B2, “intermedio superior” dentro de la escala del Marco Común. Dentro de la región, obtuvieron también buenos puntajes Costa Rica, Chile, Paraguay, Cuba y Bolivia.
A nivel nacional, la ciudad con mejor nivel de inglés resultó ser Mar del Plata, seguida por la capital, Buenos Aires. En esta última ciudad, el nivel de inglés resultó superior al de países como Suiza, República Checa y Grecia. En tercer lugar quedó la ciudad de Santa Fe, seguida por La Plata, Córdoba, Mendoza y Rosario. Una mención especial tuvieron Corrientes, San Miguel de Tucumán y Paraná, que mejoraron sustancialmente en el último año.
Los nuevos paradigmas educativos en enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras, que priorizan las habilidades comunicativas en contextos reales parecen ser la principal clave de los buenos niveles de adquisición del inglés, dado que resultan más atractivos y fáciles de poner en práctica, lo que refuerza su aprendizaje. En términos de género, las mujeres suelen tener niveles de educación más altos, si bien su inserción laboral aún está condicionada por prejuicios y prácticas sexistas que las relegan. Si bien no es posible hacer relaciones lineales, en líneas generales, los países con más alto dominio de inglés presentan mejores tasas de educación, de prosperidad y menores desigualdades de género, constituyendo sociedades más igualitarias.
