Google announces App to detect skin condition
Last week Google shared a preview of a new artificial intelligence tool that aims to help people identify skin, hair and nail conditions. The app, Derm Assist, will use images uploaded by patients to identify possible abnormalities. It is expected to launch later this year.
The user may upload up to 3 images of the skin abnormality of concern from different angles. The app will ask some questions regarding the skin type, the duration of the condition, and any other symptoms that may help to more accurately identify the condition. It will then analyse this information and search its database of 288 skin conditions to create a list of possible matching afflictions. The high-resolution camera in smartphones along with the advances in AI, will help search for skin lesions that may often be difficult to describe in words alone.
Google has indicated that each year over ten billion searches relate to skin, hair and nail conditions. Derm Assist is a way to start the evaluation of a skin lesion, however, users should not take results as definitive diagnosis. The app is not meant to substitute professional medical advice as many conditions require clinical examination, further testing and treatment.

La semana pasada Google compartió un avance de una nueva herramienta de inteligencia artificial que ayudará al autodiagnóstico de afecciones de la piel, el cabello y las uñas. La app, Derm Assist, utilizará imágenes subidas por pacientes para reconocer posibles anomalías. Se espera que se lance a fines de este año.
El usuario podrá subir hasta 3 imágenes de la lesión en cuestión desde distintos ángulos. La aplicación procederá a preguntar sobre el tipo de piel, la duración de la afección y cualquier otro síntoma que pueda ayudar a identificar la dolencia con mayor precisión. A continuación, analizará esta información y buscará en su base de datos de 288 anomalías para crear una lista de posibles coincidencias. Spain open borders to vaccinated tourists
Spain will allow fully vaccinated travellers to visit the country as of June 7. This policy includes tourists from non-EU countries, such as Argentina. However, it applies solely to those who have received a vaccine approved by the World Health Organization or the European Medicines Agency. This means that only people who can certify the full vaccination protocol from BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV and Sinopharm will be able to enter the country. The Sinovac and Sputnik V vaccines are expected to be accepted by the WHO in the coming weeks.
Spain was the second most popular travel destination in 2019 and hopes to bring in more than 45 million tourists in 2021, half as many as before the pandemic. It is expected that the vaccine certification along with the easing of restrictions in other countries will stimulate the recovery of the battered tourism sector.
On the other hand, the European Parliament has agreed on a European Union vaccine passport, an «EU COVID Digital Certificate», which will allow movement within the Schengen area. It still must pass through the Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee and be finally confirmed in June.
España abre fronteras a turistas vacunados
España permitirá a los viajeros vacunados visitar el país a partir del 7 de junio. Esto incluye a los turistas de países no pertenecientes a la UE, como Argentina, aunque sólo aceptará a quienes hayan recibido una vacuna reconocida por la Organización Mundial de la Salud o la Agencia Europea del Medicamento. Esto significa que sólo podrán entrar en el país las personas que puedan certificar el esquema completo de las vacunas de BioNTech/Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen Pharmaceutica NV y Sinopharm. Se espera que en las próximas semanas las vacunas Sinovac y Sputnik V también sean aprobadas por la OMS.
España fue el segundo destino más visitado en 2019 y espera traer más de 45 millones de turistas en 2021, la mitad que antes de la pandemia. La expectativa está puesta en que el certificado de la vacuna junto con la flexibilización de las restricciones en otros países estimule la recuperación del maltrecho sector turístico.
Por otro lado, el Parlamento Europeo ha acordado un pasaporte de vacunas de la Unión Europea, un «Certificado Digital COVID de la UE», que permitirá la movilidad dentro del espacio Schengen. Todavía resta que pase por la Comisión de Libertades Civiles del Parlamento y sea confirmado finalmente en junio.
Giant otter discovered in Chaco
The government of Chaco and the Fundación Rewilding Argentina reported the rediscovery of the giant otter, a species thought to be extinct in El Impenetrable for at least 100 years. The last sighting of this species in the country was in the 1980s in Misiones.
The giant otter has the greatest body length of its species. An adult specimen can be 1.8 meters long and weigh 33 kilos. It is the noisiest otter and its vocalizations have been catalogued in distinct types that indicate alarm, aggression and tranquillity. This otter lives in large rivers and wetlands in northern and central South America and it is considered extinct in Argentina and threatened with extinction worldwide, due to poaching for its skin.
There are currently four specimens in the country. Three of them were brought from Europe and live in captivity waiting to be reintroduced to the wild. The recently discovered otter is the fourth in the country and the only one currently living in the wild.
The Rewilding Foundation and the Chaco government have committed to take the necessary measures to protect the otter from poaching.
Descubren nutria gigante en Chaco
Esta semana el gobierno de la provincia de Chaco y la Fundación Rewilding Argentina informaron el redescubrimiento de la nutria gigante o lobo gargantilla, especie se creía extinta en El Impenetrable chaqueño desde hace al menos 100 años. En el país, el último avisaje de esta especie había sido en la década del 80 en Misiones.
La nutria gigante es la más larga de la especie del mundo. Un ejemplar adulto puede medir hasta 1,8 metros y pesar 33 kilos. Es la más ruidosa y se han documentado vocalizaciones que indican alarma, agresividad y tranquilidad. Habita en grandes ríos y humedales del norte y centro de Sudamérica. Se la considera extinta en Argentina y amenazada de extinción a nivel mundial, a raíz de la caza furtiva para aprovechar su piel.
En la actualidad, son cuatro los ejemplares que se encuentran en el país. Tres de ellas fueron traídas de Europa y viven en cautiverio a la espera de ser reintroducidas a la naturaleza. La nutria recientemente descubierta es la cuarta en el país y la única que actualmente vive en libertad.
La Fundación Rewilding y el gobierno chaqueño se comprometieron a tomar las medidas necesarias para proteger al ejemplar de la caza furtiva.
Friends: the reunion hits screen this week
The much-awaited reunion of the hit sitcom will be released on May 27th in the US. 17 years after the show wrapped up, all six original cast members, Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc came together for a one-off episode to reminisce about the iconic comedy.
Dubbed ‘The One Where They Get Back Together’, the special will be a retrospective that reunites the stars and producers behind the series. A trailer released last week revealed the stars wandering around the show’s original sets at Warner Bros Studios, such as the friends’ apartments and Central Perk coffee shop, and meeting guests who had appeared on the show, like Tom Selleck and Reese Witherspoon. The special will also feature the stars doing re-enactments of episodes, as well as taking part in a live panel discussion.
A date for the release of the special in Argentina has not been set, but it is expected to come out in June once streaming service HBO Max launches in Latin America. However, it is likely that titbits of the reunion will be available as soon as it hits US’s screens.
