[ENG] New covid detection tool

The Government of Buenos Aires City has developed an AI based system that analyses coughs and discerns whether it is compatible with COVID-19. This project opens the possibility of identifying potential coronavirus cases through an individual’s mobile phone without the need for immediate testing.

City researchers gathered 3,000 positive coughs that were contrasted with 3,000 negative coughs. This way, they built a database that has trained the artificial intelligence model. The algorithm can recognize the cough patterns of positive patients and differentiate them from the rest. The system complements the questionnaire that is answered through Boti, the City’s WhastsApp chatbot. The user who wants to know if his symptoms are compatible with COVID-19, will answer the questions and then send an audio with his cough. The bot will analyze it if it matches the patterns of positive cases.

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the MIT, have conducted their own research with over 70000 volunteers. The results showed that it’s AI model can correctly identify 98.5% of cases, including asymptomatic ones. Furthermore, UK’s health system is also using an algorithm to detect infected people through the cough.

[ENG] Where should I vote? Voter registry published

The National Electoral Chamber published the definitive voter registry for the upcoming legislative elections. Citizens can see the assigned voting places at www.padron.gob.ar. The Open, Simultaneous and Mandatory Primary Elections will be held on September 12th and the general elections on November 14th.

The electoral authorities have taken new organizational measures to carry out the next national elections to comply with the special protocol against the Covid-19. In this regard, no more than eight polling stations per establishment will be allowed in order to avoid crowds. Likewise, high risk people will have a priority time slot to cast their votes. In addition, each establishment must have personal protection and hygiene elements. On the other hand, election officials will be trained virtually. Also, each polling place will have a «health facilitator», who will be in charge of enforcing the protocol and prevention measures. Finally, although people presenting symptoms compatible with coronavirus will not be required to vote, the electoral authorities of each district will have to determine the procedure for those who nonetheless wish to exercise their right to vote.

[ENG] UN warns everybody of climate crisis

A document prepared by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns everybody that the climate crisis will cause the global average temperature to rise by 1.5ºC in the 2030s, several years earlier than expected. According to the report, global surface temperatures have risen faster since 1970 than in any other 50-year period over the past 2,000 years. Most of the planet is already enduring extreme temperatures and heat waves, with this year’s July being the hottest month on record. Meanwhile, droughts and their consequences continue to affect several territories. On the other hand, northern Europe and parts of North America are suffering from increased rainfall and devastating floods.

The report points out that in the next ten years the planet will suffer more frequent and extreme droughts, wildfires, rising sea levels that would endanger coastal cities, as well as serious economic effects for activities such as agriculture and livestock farming. Fragile ecosystems, such as corals, could also disappear. Experts argue that the actions implemented so far are not sufficient to reverse global warming as they call for a drastic reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, particularly an end to coal and fossil fuels.

[ENG] Ashton Kutcher faces controversy

Last month, Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were guests at the Armchair Expert podcast, where they said they only bathe their children when they are visibly dirty or start to smell bad and that they don’t always use soap. The actress recalled that in her childhood she didn’t have hot water at home, so she didn’t bathe every day either. Likewise, her husband agreed and added: «Now, here’s the thing: if you can see the dirt on them, you have to bathe them. Otherwise, there’s no point.» The actor argued that daily soap causes the skin to get rid of its natural oils.

After the repercussions that their statements had in the media, last Wednesday Kutcher decided to post a video on his Instagram account in which he laughs at the criticism they received. He appears in their bathroom complaining to his wife that she bathes their children too much. You’re putting water on the children!?’ he exclaimed. ‘Are you trying to melt them!? Are you trying to injure them with water!? This is ridiculous!’ Ashton said. ‘What’s going on!?’ It’s the fourth time this week,» he confronted Mila, who can’t contain her laughter.
