George Orwell’s most popular novel, 1984, was published seventy-two years ago today, and has become since a ground-breaking book in the dystopian genre. Written at the height of totalitarian regimes, this work of fiction describes a new social order and a world dominated by the thought and movement police.
The novel
The story takes place in a totalitarian state called Oceania in the year 1984. In a retro-futuristic London, people have endured decades of oppression and devastation as a result of the ongoing wars between the three superstates. In this setting, the Party keeps the citizens under perpetual surveillance, arresting and disappearing those who oppose the current order. In this context, the figure of Big Brother arises as the head of the regime and the omnipresent watchdog of society. He presents himself as the guardian of all actions and activities of the population through banners and posters everywhere displaying his face and the phrase «Big Brother Is Watching You”. Although Big Brother is a main character in 1984, he is not a real person as such, but rather a propaganda icon. In order to control thought, the new regime creates Newspeak, an extremely simplified version of English, which eliminates unwanted meanings of words and prevents the development of ideas contrary to the new order.
The main character of the novel is Winston Smith, an ordinary 39-year-old man who works for one of the government ministries rewriting articles and doctoring photographs so that they comply with the ideology and appearance that Big Brother wishes to display. Behind the image of a respectful Outer Party member, he secretly hates the totalitarian control and seeks to understand the motives behind the regimen’s oppressive policies, while harbouring dreams of rebellion.
The historic context
As previously mentioned, 1984 is a dystopian novel published after World War II, in an era marked by totalitarian regimes such as Nazism, Francoism and Stalinism. Orwell was undoubtedly inspired by the events of his time, both from his own experience in the Spanish Civil War and from news reports of the population control practices shared by fascist and communist regimes.
In this regard, the author explicitly portrays the most extreme features of totalitarianism through a dystopian narrative, where practices of mid-20th century oppressive regimes, such as the rewriting of the past and the cult of personality, are easily identifiable.
The author
George Orwell was born as Eric Arthur Blair in the then British colony of Motihari in India in 1903. A year later his family moved to England where he grew up. He was a prolific writer, novelist, essayist and journalist. He wrote on a wide range of topics related to contemporary society, politics and literature. He rose to fame in 1946, when he published Animal Farm, a fable that tells the story of a group of animals that rebels against their human farmer in hopes of achieving an equal society. The novella satirizes the events of the 1918 Russian Revolution and criticises the rise of a bureaucracy estranged from the original goals of the revolution.
Orwell spent the last years of his life in hospital while suffering from tuberculosis. This is when he wrote his most popular work, 1984. He died six months after its publication, which prevented him from enjoying success. The novel has been translated into multiple languages, as well as adapted into different formats, including two movies, one in 1956 and the other in 1984. He died on 21 January 1950, in London, England, at age 46.

Hace setenta y dos años se publicaba 1984, la popular novela escrita por George Orwell, que se convertiría en un libro de referencia del género distópico. Escrita en el apogeo de los regímenes totalitarios, la ficción describe un nuevo orden social y un mundo dominado por la policía del pensamiento y el movimiento.
La novela
La acción trascurre en un Estado llamado Oceanía, específicamente en una Londres retro futurista en el año 1984. Bajo un halo de opresión y devastación producto de las continuas guerras entre las tres superpotencias, gobierna el Partido, que mantiene a los ciudadanos bajo vigilancia perpetua, arrestando y haciendo desaparecer a quienes se opongan al orden vigente. En este contexto se inscribe la figura del Gran Hermano, la cabeza del régimen y el custodio omnipresente de la sociedad. Por medio de pancartas y murales repartidos por todos lados que exhiben su rostro y la frase “El Gran Hermano te vigila”, se presenta como el guardián de todas las acciones y actividades que realiza la población. Si bien el Gran Hermano es un protagonista en 1984, no es un personaje como tal, sino por el contrario un icono propagandístico. En este afán por controlar el pensamiento, el nuevo régimen crea el neolenguaje, una versión extremadamente simplificada del inglés, que elimina los significados no deseados de las palabras e impide el desarrollo de ideas contrarias al nuevo orden.
En este contexto, el protagonista de la novela es Winston Smith, un hombre tranquilo de 39 años que trabaja para uno de los ministerios del gobierno reescribiendo artículos y editando fotografías para que armonicen con la ideología y la imagen que desea exhibir el Partido. Detrás de la imagen de un respetuoso miembro del Partido, odia en secreto las políticas de control del régimen y busca entender los motivos ocultos de sus políticas represivas, mientras sueña con la posibilidad de la rebelión.
El contexto histórico
Como ya se mencionó 1984 es una novela distópica publicada después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, en una época marcada por regímenes totalitarios, tales como el nazismo, el franquismo y el estalinismo. Orwell sin duda se inspiró en los sucesos de su tiempo, tanto de su propia experiencia en la Guerra Civil Española, como las noticias sobre las prácticas de control de la población desarrolladas comunes a regímenes fascistas y comunistas.
En este sentido, el autor retrata explícitamente las características fundamentales del totalitarismo en su máxima expresión a través de un relato distópico donde es inevitable observar la descripción de prácticas de regímenes totalitarios de mediados del siglo XX, tales como la reescritura del pasado, así como también la denuncia al culto a la personalidad.

George Orwell, cuyo nombre de nacimiento era Eric Arthur Blair, nació en la entonces colonia británica Motihari, en la India, en 1903, y se crío en Inglaterra. Fue un prolífico escritor, novelista, ensayista y periodista. Escribió sobre una amplia gama de temas relacionados con la sociedad, la política y la literatura contemporáneas. Cobró notoriedad con la novela Rebelión en la granja, publicada en 1946, una fábula protagonizada por animales que se rebelan contra el granjero con el objetivo de crear una sociedad equitativa. De acuerdo con el propio autor, la obra satirizaba sobre el devenir de la Revolución Rusa de 1918, y denunciaba el ascenso de una burocracia ajena a los principios iniciales de la revolución.
Orwell transcurrió los últimos años de su vida en un hospital debido a los efectos de la tuberculosis que afectaban su salud. Allí escribió su obra más popular, 1984. Murió 6 meses después de su publicación, impidiéndole disfrutar del éxito. La novela fue traducida en múltiples idiomas, así como también adaptada en diversos formatos, incluidas dos versiones cinematográficas, una de 1956 y otra de 1984. Falleció el 21 de enero de 1950, en Londres Inglaterra, a la edad de 46 años.
