Joe Biden reached 306 electoral votes and would be elected president of the United States

It seems that, slowly, the uncertainties and entanglements arising from the presidential elections in the US are beginning to clear up. With the end of the counting of the votes in Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina, the Democratic party that nominated Joe Biden as president reached 306 votes in the Electoral College, 36 more than necessary to have an absolute majority. This makes it possible for Biden to be proclaimed as the new president, starting in January 2021. Current Republican President Donald Trump obtained only 232 votes, so he could not be re-elected.

The confirmation came after the end of the count of votes in the three states, in which it was determined that Biden won in Arizona and Georgia, while Trump won in North Carolina. In this way, Biden scored a historic victory in Arizona, a traditionally Republican state. Additionally, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan also veered to the Democratic side from the 2016 election.

Both the campaign and the election and the vote count were marked by the exceptional circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, which generated a record of early and mail-in votes. On the other hand, Trump has constantly insisted that fraud was committed against him in several states, without being able to provide concrete evidence to support these accusations. To this day, the president refuses to acknowledge his defeat, even though most leaders of other countries have congratulated Biden as the winner. The Republican’s strategy consists of carrying out various judicial proposals questioning the vote count or the validity of early or postal votes, with which he hopes to be able to reverse the results in some key states. However, it is believed that this judicial strategy is highly unlikely to be successful, as there is no firm evidence of fraud.

Judicial setback for Britney Spears: they reject the removal of her father as guardian

Last Tuesday, November 10, Britney Spears suffered a severe judicial setback in Los Angeles, when her request to remove her father James Spears from the guardianship that he has exercised over her since 2008 was rejected. Those close to the singer affirmed that, if there’s no modification to this resolution, Britney will retire from her career.

The legal conflict dates to 2008, in which, as a result of a series of nervous breakdowns, Britney Spears was placed under the tutelage of her father as she was considered incapable of fending for herself. Although it was supposed to be a temporary measure, the guardianship has been extended without interruption since then. The followers of the popular artist have denounced that there is an economic interest in this situation, since James and others receive high fees for the management of the wealth of the singer, who has remained professionally active since then. The inconsistency between alleged premature dementia and Britney’s successful career fuels suspicions that James is benefiting from guardianship.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for December 16. The intervening judge, Brenda Pennyse, accepted that the trust fund Bessemer Trust exercise joint custody of Britney’s financial affairs with James, although she rejected the complete removal of this. In this way, and if this decision is not reversed, there is a risk that Britney will withdraw from her career, further aggravating the conflict.

The Congress dismissed President Martín Vizcarra in Perú

A new source of tension emerged in Latin America last Monday, November 9 at night, when Peruvian President Martín Vizcarra was removed from office in the framework of a session of the Congress of that country, who approved his expulsion by 130 votes considering him “morally incapable ”of exercising the position. The decision generated strong opposition from the country’s population, who came out to demonstrate in the streets and was harshly repressed by the security forces.

The Andean country’s political instability dates to 2016, the year in which Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was narrowly elected against Keiko Fujimori, daughter of the dictator Alberto Fujimori, who ruled the country during the 1990s and is accused of serious violations. to human rights. Kuczynski won the 2016 elections but had a parliamentary minority in Congress, dominated by Fujimori. Due to the causes of corruption in the Lava Jato case, which also affect other former presidents of the country, Kuczynski resigned in March 2018, assuming Vizcarra in his place. The latter dissolved Parliament and called first legislative elections, and finally presidential elections for April 2021, in order to normalize the turbulent Peruvian political situation.

However, Congress echoed new allegations of corruption not yet proven against Vizcarra, for which it promoted a failed impeachment attempt in September, to finally approve by a large majority his removal last Monday. The low popularity of Manuel Merino, the new interim president, accused in turn of corruption, together with the instability that is generated in the face of the April 2021 elections angered the population, which disapproves of Vizcarra’s removal with almost a 80% according to surveys. Thousands of people took to the streets of Lima and were repressed in police procedures described as excessive and brutal by national and international human rights organizations.

Argentina ratified the agreement against workplace harassment

On Wednesday, November 11, Argentina became the third country in the world to ratify Convention 190 of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which establishes guidelines against the elimination of violence and harassment in the world of work. The measure was approved by a large majority in the Chamber of Deputies, so the agreement will begin to take effect from June 2021.

Convention 190 was approved in Geneva in June 2019, after deliberations by government, trade union and business representatives of the 187 member countries of the ILO. Its main novelty is that it sets clear and specific criteria to recognize, prevent and address violence in workplace contexts, with a gender perspective. According to the details of the document, workplace violence is not only exercised in the face-to-face place of work, but also includes virtual communications, public space and any other area where a work relationship takes place. This provides protection to male and female workers against virtual harassment practices or in areas of socialization outside the physical space of employment.

The approval of the agreement was celebrated by referents of different political forces in the country, who agreed that it represents a clear advance in the protection of the rights of workers, whatever their contractual relationship.
